Malaysia Prove Too Strong

TEAM Malaysia coasted into the second round of the 2006 PartyPoker.com World Cup of Pool at the Newport Centre in South Wales as they beat Qatar 9-3.

The Middle Easterners have always been considered one of the sport’s developing nations but, on this showing, still have plenty of work to do to catch up with other countries.

Malaysian players Ibrahim Bin Amir and Patrick Ooi Fook Yuen had a little too much top level experience for their opponents who gave it their best but came up substantially short.

The Malaysians took the opening rack but the Qatar duo had a great chance to level it in the second.

However, a nervous miscue with three balls left on the table allowed the Malaysians to take the initiative and the Qataris sealed their fate with a scratch.

More confident play from Bin Amir and Yuen moved the score to 3-0 but Qatar opened their account in the fourth rack.

The teams shared the next two racks as the score went to 4-2. A weak safety from Team Malaysia in the next gave Qatar a great chance with the balls spread out on the table but the run broke down on the pink 4 following a poor positional shot and Malaysia ran out to go 5-2.

Definitely a minnow in the world of pool, the Qatar duo of Bashar Hussain and Fahad Mohammadi was struggling to stay in touch with the opposition. With an alternate break format in operation, Qatar had a nightmare as the cue ball bounced off the pack, flying off the table and with ball in hand the Malaysians increased their lead to 6-2.

A fluked 9 combination in the next by Qatar reduced the deficit but they lost the break in the tenth as Malaysia moved into a 7-3 lead. Yuen and bin Amir proceeded to cruise through the final two racks to take a very comfortable 9-3 victory.

The Malaysians now face the winners of this evening’s match between Malta and the Philippines.
