Everyone thought Supoj Saenla will be receiving the runner-up’s prize when Chan Wai Ki stormed to an early 5-0 lead when the Final match commenced at 2pm.
Chan seemed to be unstoppable when he stormed to a 5-0 lead with breaks of 60, 82 and 102, not giving Supoj a chance to play during the first 5 frames. Even after the 15 minutes interval break, Supoj could not find his pace as he trailed 1-6 with Chan needing only 1 frame to capture the title.
However, things changed for the better for Supoj as he made a clearance of 74 points in Frame 8 to reduce the frames difference. It was history from then on for Chan as Supoj went on to win 5 frames in a row with breaks of 75 and 58 to win frame and match on the final frame.
Asking how he felt after the Final,”I thought I was going to lose when I was down 1-6 as Chan was totally unstoppable. When he started to miss shots, I tried my best to reduce the gap and I think that pressured him. I regained my form after 2 frames and finally won it”
This is his second victory in Malaysia after he won his first title in Melaka in 2002. Both were similar encounters as he also won that title, playing until the final frame with his fellow Thai compatriot, Praprut Chaithanasakun.
“I like playing in Malaysia maybe because I think it is my lucky place,” he said laughingly.
